Our Empty German Apartment Tour

Hi! Happy Wednesday!

I hope you guys are having an amazing week so far! I sure am because we have FINALLY moved into our flat this past weekend!! Woooooo! For the past month we have been living in an extended stay style hotel room until our flat became available for us to move in. Please keep in mind the hotel room was about 350 square feet. It was a such a nice hotel but we did start to get cramped - mainly because our air shipment arrived two weeks ago, so we had huge boxes filled with some of our US stuff along with the six suitcases we brought on the plane. Believe me when I say, the struggle was real. 

We actually found our flat when we visited for our Look and See trip back in October. Rob’s company hired an agent who was fluent in German and English to help us throughout the whole process. He scheduled our flat visits and translated between us and the landlords, and also helped with the signing of contracts. Having an agent made life so much easier! Our flat was the third flat we toured (third times the charm)! The location and the large windows in the living room and bedroom that allows for the best natural lighting is what sold us. The flat is near a river with the most beautiful views and plenty of coffee shops and cute restaurants.

Homes are so much different here you guys! One major difference is there are no closets. All three flats we looked at - zero closets. Two of the flats didn’t have a kitchen, it can be common to furnish the kitchen as a renter. Just picture an empty room that would need cabinets, counters, refrigerator, sink, stove, etc. installed to make it a kitchen. Thankfully the flat we moved into came equipped with a kitchen, washer machine in the building basement, a balcony with a cute neighborhood view, great natural lighting, and plenty of space for the both of us. Since we had just moved into our apartment back in the states, we had SO much furniture! We are extremely fortunate that his company paid for the shipment of all of our furniture and belongings - I love our furniture so much so I really didn’t want to sell it! Most of our clothes came by air two weeks ago and the rest of our clothes along with our furniture was sent over by water shipment which arrived this past weekend! Those movers slayed all morning long on Saturday, v THANKFUL! 

Honestly, it felt like Christmas morning opening all of my goodies LOL. It was almost like I was receiving it for the first time all over again. 110% brought WAY too much stuff, so hopefully I can find a place to store everything, otherwise I might go a little cray. Either way I’ll be sure to keep you updated. It is definitely refreshing to have familiar things in an unfamiliar place. Our new flat already has a much more homey feel to it.

So, I wanted to share some pictures with you of the new place!!! I took these photos Friday evening before we moved anything in. I really wanted to be able to show you how a German flat looks like empty, and eventually once we’re all finished unpacking I will show you all how a German flat looks like furnished and decorated with an American twist!!! I can’t wait to bring you along the decorating process!
