Living Abroad During COVID-19

I find it hard to believe that I am writing this post. One of the main reasons for starting this blog is to document my crazy journey of living abroad, which has primarily consisted of the most amazing experiences but along with all the good comes "the real" - and it got real, real fast. Now, here we are trying to figure out what in the world is going on, what we can do to overcome this and what the future holds.

Recently, I have had lots of family & friends from back home reach out to see how Rob and I are doing and want to know how are things in Germany. (ily ðŸ’•)

UPDATE

I can't speak on behalf of other cities throughout Germany, but in Düsseldorf isn't doing too great according to the numbers. Our state currently has the most cases in the country. Up until the past few weeks it kinda felt like life as usual. We had our routines, go to the office, go to gym, store, travel, eat out on the weekends and hang out with friends. Recently, we started noticing more news articles talking about the virus and less people out and about (which is abnormal here) and then,

  • Two girlfriends from the states were coming to visit in April and their flight got cancelled
  • Surrounding country borders began to close
  • Cancelled two trips for the month of April
  • Last Monday marked the first day of work from home for the next month for both me and Rob Let me just say, we live in a 615 square foot flat. ðŸ˜‚ We are nice & snug over here, friends!
  • Most restaurants are closed, some are available for takeaway
  • Shopping is closed
  • Grocery stores remain open and only thing we've struggled to find is TP (luckily we have 7 rolls) and cleaning supplies
  • No more than two people can be together outside, with the exception of families
  • This past week we only left the house to go to the grocery store and to take walks for fresh air.

Although we have made Germany our home, it is a really strange feeling not being "home" when something like this is happening. We do feel safe and confident in the health system, government officials and in our jobs to have our best interest in mind but at the same time we do also wish we were back in the states. As of Friday, Rob's company has offered to send expats back home which is something we are considering at this time. ðŸ˜¬ We are taking it hour by hour at this point, hoping to make the right decision soon.

Stay safe and take care of yourselves and others!!!

XO, Tor
